Good decisions were made… a video story

For my video project, I took inspiration from videos I have seen on YouTube in the past. I was specifically drawn to videos where there is a voiceover that describes what is happening in each frame of the video to effectively tell a story. I wanted to show what a typical night is for me when I don’t want to eat any of the food that I have in my apartment. I thought this would be a fun and interesting way to bring in my topic of food reviews into a story format.

For this particular story, my “review” isn’t about the technicalities of the food I was eating, but rather the overall experience. In the video I explain each part of the meal at La Casa Lopez, while the video footage gives the audience the visuals to picture the atmosphere better. I show a progression throughout the meal and the emotions that I am feeling each step of the way.

For this project I used solely my own audio and video and strayed away from using any outside content. Originally, I was going to use background music behind the voiceover audio. I opted out of this option due to the distraction it caused. With the background music, you could not focus on the story being told. To make the video, I imported all video footage into premiere and arranged it in the progression of the night. I then cut the video that was not wanted and removed most of the audio from the clips. Then I recorded voiceover audio to match up with the video.

I am not sure what I want to do going forward with this project and I am open to suggestions. I like the simplicity of the video, but I feel that there is room for improvement.

  1. Hello Addy,

AMAZING job on your video! I love how you took a different route to this assignment, and how every shot you recorded contributed to your overall theme of the video. Your shots were just the right length and would not bore the audience due to the time length. Something I think you should do is add low volume music to the background of your video; I know you said that it was hard because it would be hard to listen to your voice, but if you put it to the right volume you could really do a good job on your video. I also think you could probably adjust the lighting in your video shots in order to match one color scheme instead of all the shots looking different in regards to the colors. Your video was overall great and I loved how you added a voiceover for your audience.

  2. This video was actually so funny. I really loved the end where you threw away the top ramen out the door after eating a better meal. What your video is strong in is having a story that is pretty solid and relatable. I really like that it was inspired by youtube vlogs because it makes the video look more realistic in a sense. Two things you could work on would be to put music on the background and to have a stabilizing shot of the food. The music could be low in the background just to add a bit more to the video. I also really like the overall humor of the video. I also really like how relatable this video is as stated before! As college students, we always want something other than top ramen. Good job and I am excited to see what else you do this video story.

  3. First off, I love the introduction of your video. The voice-over is funny and creates a clear concept for what your video is going to showcase. Taco Tuesday is by far the best day of the week, and the content of your videos aligns perfectly with your overall course concept. I love when you talked about the salsa, that’s definitely the best part of the meal at LA CASA. Your narration is happy and shows a great interest in what you are recording. It is not hard to follow your storyline at all. The ending is hilarious and shows great personality throughout your video. Something I would suggest editing in is text that is seen at the beginning and end of your video. You could add a title slide with the name of your video, as well as a ‘filmed and edited by’ clip at the end to summarize the content and who made it. I would also suggest adding a few ambient sounds that took place in your video without the voice over, possibly the sound of the restaurant atmosphere at La Casa or your friend saying, ‘Oh this is delicious’. Overall, the content of your video is entertaining and fun, keep up the great work!

  4. After receiving some feedback from my classmates, I have a better idea of what I want to add to my project before I submit my final. First off, the first change that I would like to make is added ambiance music in the background. One of my classmates suggested that if it is just the right volume it shouldn’t interfere with the voiceover. Another change I want to make is adding text at the beginning of the video with a title to set the scene as well as the end of the video with the appropriate credits. As for the actual video clips, I think I will try to adjust the lighting so that it is more continuous throughout the video. This could be a challenge considering the lighting in the restaurant is vastly different than of my apartment. Once these changes are made, I believe my video will be final ready.
