An Audio Story Draft

For this project I have created a narrative story segment in a podcast style. I thought this format would be best to complement the existing content that is part of my blog already. I chose a story of how I found the best happy hour in the Pullman-Moscow area for this project because it relates to my food review topic.

Something that challenged me was the limit on time. I feel that my original audio file was not as quick and concise as it needed to be to successfully portray the story. If I had more time allowed in my audio recording, I would be able to explain how the coffee, pizza, and beer compared to the other local restaurants and coffee shops. Possibly for my next version of this audio story, I will be more concise with how I start my audio story so I can get farther into my story.

The elements of my audio stories are the intro, the main story, and the background music to make the story more relaxed. My intro was inspired by the introduction used on many podcasts where they have a signature sound to make the podcast more recognizable. For the end of my introduction I also recorded sounds of me opening and drinking out of a can. This element was inspired by the production credits shown at the beginning of movies where short and concise images are shown to let the audience know what companies were involved with the making of the film. I thought this would be a creative way to specialize my podcast from others.

For the background music, I visited the website that was suggested within our readings, Freesound.org, and used the audio titled Free Music Background Loop uploaded by the user Slaking_97. This audio is free to use and remix as long as the owner is credited. This audio can be found at https://freesound.org/people/Slaking_97/sounds/459706/.

  1. Overall, you have a very quality audio story. I think that the most effective part of your story is the background audio throughout the entire story. I think that this really helps to add a dimension to your story and to keep the readers engaged. This shows some advanced level audio processing. I also like that you are passionate about your subject, where to find the best happy hour in the Moscow Pullman area. It is obvious that you were really passionate about this. One thing that I would change about this story is that it kind of drifts without transitions. I think that you need to have a more clear beginning, middle and end. It would be most effective if you planned out the story in segments. This would help to break it up and add more depth to the story. Another suggestion that I have is to lower your background audio in points. While the background audio is very effective, at times it seems to overpower the rest of the story. If you lowered the volume or used the fade in effect I think it would sound superb.

  2. I really like the whole idea of your audio. The introduction really grasped me in and made me want to listen to more. I think something your audio is strong in is the introduction + the music combo. I also really enjoyed the can opening because it felt like I was listening to an actual podcast. I would say that there are only a few things that could be fixed. I noticed a few like tripping over words at the end of the audio but that can be fixed with re-recording just that bit. Another thing that I noticed was that when you said “1-6” I could tell there was a clip that was like either missing or stacked on top. The solution would be to either re-record that tiny bit to try to make that portion less jumpy. Over all, I really liked this audio and the opening was great for hooking an audience.

  3. Hi Addy! I really enjoyed your audio story. I thought it was very informative and engaging for the listener. My favorite part was the intro with the different sound effects and background music. I would suggest eliminating the background music after the introduction because it was a little distracting and kind of overpowered your own voice. I thought the information you presented was really interesting and I like how you described your journey of discovering this new place. At times you seemed to ramble a bit about information that wasn’t as important. I think it would be really cool if you cut some of that out and instead included a short clip about what your friend thought of the experience. Overall, I think you did a really good job on your story. It related really nicely to your chosen topic and was very fun to listen to. Really good job!

  4. After receiving feedback from my peers, I would like to make some changes to my audio story. First off, I want to restructure the story to have a more distinct beginning, middle, and end. I rambled on a bit in my original recording and did not have time to get into the crucial details of the story. With being more concise and to the point I will better reach the listener’s attention. I also might incorporate an interview portion to my audio story. The second big change that I will be going to make is by adjusting the background music throughout the story. I had received some feedback that it was distracting and too loud and I was even suggested to remove it altogether. I believe that I will have to try out a few things to see what is going to give me the best result. Overall, I am happy with the direction my audio story is headed in.

  5. I really like your intro, it explained completely what your audio narrative was. I liked the style, it makes it easy to digest as a podcast. I thought that opening of the soda can was very unique that ties in easily with the name of your project. Your story was clear and concise about the best happy-hour place in the local area. One suggestion for improvement could be to play around with how you articulate your sentences so that it is more fluid throughout your description. Another suggestion for improvement could be your ending, it seems very abrupt, but it is clear that the reason for that is a time limitation. Your introduction is very strong and the volume and background for your audio draft was a really good choice and is reflective of the style of your narrative. It’s well designed and can’t wait to hear your final draft.
